Melvin Seals and the Jerry Garcia Band arrived in Buffalo, NY to entertain their faithful fans and Deadheads on October 17th at The Tralf Music Hall. JGB Band is an American rock band led by Melvin Seals, who in 1980 joined the Jerry Garcia Band and remained a member until Jerry Garcia’s untimely death in 1995. Melvin is most revered for his powerful and high-spirited Hammond B-3 organ and keyboards in the Jerry Garcia Band, adding his gospel-soul touches to the rhythm and blues base of the JGB. After Garcia’s death Seals took charge and under his leadership, the slightly renamed JGB Band pays tribute to Garcia by performing his songs and remaining faithful to his style. Its mission is to continue the musical legacy of the Jerry Garcia Band, of which Seals was a long time member. The current member of the band are Melvin Seals (keyboards), Dave “A Bear” Herbert (guitar), Jimmy Tebeau (bass), Peter Lavezzolli (drums), Cheryl Rucker and Shirley Starks (vocals).
The band from the onset of the show had the crowd excited and up on it’s feet dancing, starting off with “The Harder They Come”. The first set included other classics such as “Get Out of My Life Woman”, “C’est La Vie”, and “Mystery Train” and closed out the set with “Midnight Moonlight”. After a brief break the band returned to the stage opening with “See What Love Can Do”. Continuing where they left off, the band slowly culled the audience to their feet with their electrifying sound. The second set highlights included “Ain’t No Bread in the Bread Box”, “Money Honey” and “Bright Side of the Road”. Guest sax player, Eric Crittenden joined the band on stage for the “Let’s Spend the Night Together” and played with the band for their two encore songs “Truckin” and “Going Down the Road Feeling Bad”. A great night of music was enjoyed by all in attendance at the Tralf.
